The Speech and Debate team has done well over the years at Rocky Mountain High School. Their hard work and determination have really paid off, winning them multiple rounds and competitions. They head into a new round of competition with confidence, knowing that preparation is key. Rocky Junior, Samantha Clark said, “Don’t neglect your prep. If you have an event that you need to prep for, make sure you get that done.” According to Clark, preparation plays a major role in the team’s success, as competitors must be ready to perform under pressure with limited time to adjust.
Even with prep, competition can stir a variety of emotions, both exciting and overwhelming. Joining the team, members know that weekends will be busy, writing multiple speeches and sometimes memorizing them is difficult. A recent speech and debate took place at Meridian High on Jan 17. It started at 5:00 a.m. and lasted until 7:00 p.m. The stress of competition was grueling, but the team graciously made their rounds with confidence and professionalism. Rocky Junior, Emma Atkinson said, “We get to meet friends, take photos of course, and maybe bring home some shiny stuff. Days are long but it’s totally worth it.”
Over the course of the day, teammates learn to harness their creative anxiety. Rocky Junior, Hafsah Mohammed said, “I’m either very scattered or very put together, and I know what I have to get done. During a competition, you’re under so much adrenaline but also a type of comfort. You know what to do and you’re locked in.” According to her, this balance of pressure and confidence defines the competition experience for her and her fellow teammates. Despite long days and high pressure, the team agrees that it’s all worth it. They plan to remain focused, just like last year, and approach the 2026 season with the same determination and excitement.

speech and debate takes a lot of courage and confidence so to see that they are working hard to do what they do helps the school.
