This year, Rocky consolers and math teachers are trying something different. If you’ve spent any time in Class Choice, you might’ve noticed that you don’t have the ability to choose what math class you’re taking next year. What’s the deal?
Interestingly enough, counselors aren’t involved in this process, it is all up to the math teachers. Megan Shaw, a counselor here at Rocky, said that the counselors aren’t involved in making those decisions.
Deborah Weaver, a long time teacher at Rocky said “For the two years that our students were allowed to choose their own math class, it made my job harder because students who were not ready to be responsible for their education (do work in and out of class and prepare adequately for tests), put themselves into Honors Math 2,” a more difficult class, “I couldn’t go as quickly, I had to teach and reteach more, they had to retest more, and they felt “less than” the higher achieving students.”
If teachers are the ones picking classes for students, they could know what classes are better fit for a student’s needs. Teachers have more experience with education, as well as the classes here at Rocky, and they can talk to each other to find the best class for a student. Teachers could know a student’s needs better than the student and choose a class for them that would help them succeed.
If a student is interested in taking a harder class, Weaver says that they will have to prove themselves, to show that they can put in the work to be in a class that demands students to be involved and serious about their education.
In summary, teachers can find a class best fit for a student’s ability that will help them be most successful in school and their education.
“I think Math is a class that needs to have the teacher make the recommendation for the next class –since they need to know certain concepts really well to succeed in the next class.”

I like how you guys asked a math teacher why they think it’s a good idea and they have a good point kid if they choose their classes, they either might choose something too easy for them or something that’s too hard and the teachers know there kids pretty well so I think this was a great decision

I really liked how the writer used a quote from a math teacher to show why the teachers are choosing their students classes rather than the students themselves like they have in the past.

I think that this article is has very good information, when I first knew math teachers picked their students classes I didn’t understand why. I like how they put quotes from the math teachers explaining their perspectives. This says that they are just trying to make math easier for us students so we don’t mess up and choose a hard class thinking it will be easy.

I believe that the fact of math teachers choosing their student’s next class, is a good decision on the school’s part. With the teacher getting to understand each student’s grade history, understanding, and different mathematical skills, they can better judge what would be best for the student, who likely is unaware of the criteria for the following years ahead. Great article!

I was actually wondering why math teachers chose classes for us, so this is a really helpful article. It is well written and very informative. Thank you for writing this!
(One small edit: “counselors” is misspelled in the first paragraph)

It’s nice to know that the math teachers care about their students enough to try and find the appropriate math class for them next year.

I think this is a very good idea, and the math teachers should be able to choose which math classes students are going into for their skill level.

I was honestly confused when I got an email from my math teacher saying that she chose my next math teacher. I would like to stay in normal math and continue on from there. Though I know how this change will help teachers in our school and put some students in their rightful classes. But even then, I’d prefer to stay in my normal math and not go to something like AP or Honors. Great Writing!

i actually really like how math teachers are picking the classes for you. I think they know whats best for your education and put you in a class that they think is for you. I think this could lead to more attention being payed to what your doing and give you the grade you need and education to go to your next math class in the following years.
