Meridian is one of the fastest‑growing cities in the country, and students at Rocky Mountain High School are feeling the impact every day. From crowded hallways to packed parking lots to longer commutes, the city’s rapid expansion may be starting to affect students’ school experience.
The most noticeable change is traffic. Students report that getting to school on time has become harder as Eagle Road, Ten Mile, and Chinden continue to fill with new developments. “It’s getting harder to get to school on time, me and my mom keep having to leave earlier on the way to school because of the roads shutting down due to expansion, and more people driving,” said Robert Vinar, a freshman at Rocky.
Inside the school, growth is visible too. Larger class sizes, busier lunch lines, and limited parking have become common complaints.
Meridian’s growth is expected to continue as more families move in for jobs, schools, and housing. New neighborhoods, shopping centers, and apartment complexes are being built within minutes of RMHS.
For students, growth brings both challenges and opportunities. More businesses mean more job options, more activities, and more community events. But it also means more congestion and more pressure on schools. “Meridian growing so fast has its good and bad sides. There are more places to hang out and ride e-bikes and more job opportunities, but the traffic and crowded schools make everyday life a lot harder.,” said Carson Young, a freshman.
The school is working to adapt, such as adjusting parking procedures to planning for future enrollment increases. Still, many students wonder how much bigger Meridian can get before the strain becomes too much. As the city continues to expand, RMHS students will remain at the center of the conversation about how growth shapes daily life in one of Idaho’s fastest‑changing communities.
Idaho used to be a state that people didn’t know existed. Look at it now.

You can definitely feel the difference. Where it feels harder to get to class, and the line outside of school in the morning feels extra long week after week. Making it take more time and longer to get to school.

the hallways are very crowded, and it can make getting to class difficult if more students come to rocky, I don’t know if people will make it to class on time.
