If you have spent any time on BookTok or really any type of social media lately, you’ve probably heard the name Ryland Grace. Andy Weir’s “Project Hail Mary” took the world by storm with its sci-fi heartfelt survivalstory. With the film adaptation starring Ryan Gosling officially out in theaters, it’s time to look at the source material versus the silver screen expectations. Did Hollywood efficiently capture the energy of the book, or did some of the best elements get lost in translation? Rocky students are here to give their opinions.
One of the biggest problems with book to movie adaptations is if they are going to portray an accurate representation of everything. Emily Edvalson, a junior at Rocky, gave her thoughts on the issue of accuracy. “I think it stayed very true to the book. Going into the movie, I was expecting it because that’s what everyone was saying, but it really was. Things translated onto screen really well and they were able to add in a refreshing way,” Edvalson stated. Due to the movie’s success and appreciation for its accuracy, some fans expect there to be a sequel on the horizon, giving both readers and non-readers mixed reactions to the news. “I don’t think it needs a sequel. I don’t really see it having more to elaborate on, and it would just feel pointless,” Edvalson expressed.
Most readers had high expectations going into the film and had at least one thing they really wanted to see from the adaptation. Anne Scofield, a junior at Rocky, shares what she was most excited about. “I was excited to see all of it but especially Rocky and I think they did do a really good job of making him feel alive,” Scofield voiced. All the positive opinions about the film have left some to wonder if there was anything readers disliked about the adaptation. “One thing I wish they would have done is explain some of the science more because it kind of skips over a lot of it,” Scofield stated.
Whether you’re a fan of Andy Weir or just someone looking for a great space movie, this adaptation of “Project Hail Mary” appears to check all the boxes. While it understandably shortens some of the book’s tangents and minor subplots to keep the pacing up, it stays fairly loyal to what actually matters: the friendship between astronaut Ryland Grace and Rocky. By balancing high-stakes with a heartfelt storyline, the film captures the spirit that made the novel a hit in the first place.
