March Madness is a time when the best college teams go head-to-head during the month of March. It is a very important time for basketball players, coaches, and fans. It determines which team wants it the most and has the best chemistry. People might think that the top five teams would win nine times out of ten, but they don’t. There have been some big upsets just in the first round of March Madness.
The 9-seed Iowa Hawkeyes beat the 8-seed Clemson Tigers, and one of the biggest upsets of the tournament was the 11-seed VCU Rams beating the 6-seed UNC Tar Heels. That was one of the biggest upsets so far because VCU came back from a 20-point deficit, defeating one of the top teams in the tournament. The 10-seed Texas A&M Aggies also beat the 7-seed Saint Mary’s Gaels. Another major upset was when 12-seed High Point beat 5-seed Wisconsin. The game-winning point came from a player who had only made three-pointers the entire season and had not scored a single two-pointer until that moment, when he scored to send his team to the second round.
Speaking of the second round, there were tough matchups, such as Saint John’s beating Kansas in a close game. Dylan Darling scored the game-winning point. He had zero points the entire game, but despite that, he wanted to put his team on his back. He called for the play himself. Their coach, Rick Pitino, doubted him at first since he hadn’t scored all game, but he trusted him, and Darling delivered, sending their team to the Sweet 16. After the game, Rick Pitino said,
Another tough second-round game was Vanderbilt vs. Nebraska. Both teams went back and forth, keeping the score tight until the end. The game was tied 72–72 with 10 seconds left when Nebraska drove down the court. With five seconds left, Braden Frager, Nebraska’s forward, drove into the paint and scored, putting Nebraska up 74–72 with 2.2 seconds remaining. With only seconds left, Tyler Tanner of Vanderbilt got the ball and, with little time, drove it down to half court and took a shot. It looked good and seemed like it was going in, but at the last second, it rimmed out, advancing Nebraska to the Sweet 16.
All of these lower-ranked teams showed why rank doesn’t matter, it’s all about team chemistry in this exciting basketball tournament.
