Every Friday night, the lights cast brightly over the field at Rocky Mountain High School. The stands are packed, the band’s playing loudly, and the crowd’s roaring with excitement. Down on the field, among the players getting ready for kickoff, is junior at rocky mountain high school DeAndre Mikell, one of the defensive ends on the varsity football team. For DeAndre, football isn’t just a sport; it’s something that runs in the family. DeAndre was asked why he plays football, and he said, “I play football because of my dad he used to play in the NFL and I’ve been playing football because of him forever” DeAndre also said, “I grew up watching him play, and I’ve loved the game ever since.” Ever since he started playing in the optimist program, DeAndre has loved being part of a team, pushing himself, and learning more about the game. DeAndre was also asked what his favorite part about playing defensive end is and he replied, “I like being a defensive end because I get to tackle the quarter back When you break through the line and get that hit, it’s the greatest feeling ever.” DeAndre’s teammates and coaches all notice his energy and effort on and off the field. His teammates say that he is a very responsible teammate and friend and if something needs to be done, he will get it done and bring good energy to the team. And being out there under those bright lights, with the crowd cheering is one of DeAndre’s favorite things about football. “It’s crazy,” he said, smiling. “When you run out on the field and see everyone in the stands, it just hits you. The lights, the music, the fans, it is like everything comes together. It is what we work for all week.” He said the feeling doesn’t really go away once the game starts, either. “Even when I’m focused on the game, I can still feel the crowd,” he said. “It gives you that extra boost, especially when it’s close or we need a big stop.” Off the field, DeAndre is known for being a positive and friendly guy. His teammates say he’s always encouraging everyone, whether it’s in the locker room or during tough practice. DeAndre also works hard in the classroom. His favorite subject is history, and he says he enjoys learning about leaders and past events that shape the world. DeAndre says that he loves how everyone on the team knows each other very well and everyone is friends. When asked what his goals are, DeAndre said he wants to keep improving and help his team win as many games as possible. “I just want to get better every week,” he said. “If I can help the team, that’s all that matters. And I want to keep playing football after high school if I can. For now, DeAndre is focused on finishing out the season strong and making the most of every game. Whether it’s making a big play, celebrating with teammates, or just soaking in the crowd, he says there is nothing else like it. “Friday nights are special,” he said. “It is not just about football it’s about being part of something bigger. DeAndre said, “These moments and memories will stay with me forever even after I graduate.” Under the bright lights at Rocky Mountain High, with the crowd cheering and the game on the line, DeAndre Mikell plays the sport he loves the same one his dad once did, giving it everything he’s got, one play at a time.
