Ryan Tucker’s senior year ended the same way much of his high school career went, quietly successful.
Whether it was fixing stories in the newsroom, grinding through cross country workouts or helping lead his ultimate frisbee team, Tucker became one of the more dependable students around campus over the last four years.
Now, with graduation approaching, the senior copy editor is leaving behind both the newspaper and a strong athletic career.
Tucker participated in cross country, track and ultimate frisbee throughout high school, balancing practices, meets and deadlines at the same time. Recently, he capped off his final season in ultimate frisbee with a district championship, one of the biggest team accomplishments of his senior year.
A few days later, Tucker added another milestone.
Competing in the two mile, Tucker ran a personal-record 10:56 and qualified for districts with the win, finally breaking the 11-minute mark after chasing it for years.
“Absolutely incredible,” Tucker said. “This is the best race of my running career at any distance or event.”
For Tucker, the performance was the payoff to years of consistency.
While some athletes rely on flashy moments, Tucker built his success through steady improvement. Teammates and coaches knew him as someone willing to put in the work every day, whether that meant early morning runs, difficult track workouts or long frisbee tournaments.
That same consistency carried over into journalism.
As copy editor for the newspaper, Tucker spent much of his time behind the scenes helping edit stories, catch mistakes and improve articles before publication. While readers may not always notice the role of a copy editor, staff members quickly learned Tucker was someone they could rely on when deadlines got stressful.
His calm personality and willingness to help made him an important part of the newsroom culture.
Tucker’s favorite memory from senior year was breaking 11 minutes in the two mile, but his impact stretched far beyond one race.
Over four years, he became the type of student every program values, dependable, hard-working and willing to do the little things that often go unnoticed.
Now, as Tucker prepares to graduate, he leaves behind a legacy that includes a district championship, a breakthrough race and countless hours helping both teammates and fellow writers succeed.
