New Scheels exterior.

With the first Scheels in Idaho set to open in the spring of 2024, everyone is feeling the buzz. Currently being built, our Scheels is located just west of Roaring Springs in Meridian.

A popular trend, started by agitated husbands, shows them tailgating or playing baseball in the parking lot with other husbands while their wives are shopping. This is not one-sided however, and wives often have the same trouble when going to outdoors and sporting goods stores with their hubbys. This problem is now solved for Scheels shoppers with the inclusion of a 65-foot Ferris wheel, 16,000-gallon saltwater aquarium with more than 600 fish, and a wildlife mountain. There will also be a Fuzziwig’s Candy Shop and Ginna’s Café which will serve specialty foods and treats.

Scheels is an employee-owned company and strives to provide customers with the best retail experience. With a variety ranging from sports to outdoors and even to cozy; Scheels has something for everyone. Brands like Nike, Patagonia, Hoka, and more, cater to the needs of all, no matter the adventure, no matter the journey. In addition to the product, the service will be the best in the game, with more than 400 associates. One million plus pieces of inventory are set to be distributed throughout the 85 specialty shops. This in mind, Scheels is on track to be Idaho’s largest selection of sporting goods, fashion, and footwear.

A German immigrant by the name of Frederik A. Scheel—hence the name—opened his first store in 1902. After a down payment of $300 generated from his first potato harvest, Scheel began building his business. In 1954 Scheels added a small sporting good section to its stores, and just over ten years later, the first Scheels to be located in a mall opened in St. Cloud, Minnesota. In 1969, Scheels was officially incorporated in North Dakota. Scheels currently owns and operates 31 stores across 14 U.S. states.
