Kosovo is a country in the Balkans inhabited by majority Albanians (92%). For years there has been a debate on weather Kosovo should be part of Serbia, Albania, or its own country. February 17, 2008, Kosovo gained its independence but many countries including Serbia and its allies do not recognize Kosovo as its own country. In 1998 during the collapse of Yugoslavia, tensions started to rise in Kosovo between Albanians and ethnic Serbs in the area starting the Kosovo war. In 1999, the Kosovo war ended when President of the United States, Bill Clinton, ordered to save Kosovars from oppression and attempted genocide taken out on them by Serbia. American soldiers and NATO were sent into Kosovo to end the war. Ever since then, tensions between Ethnic Serbs and Albanians living in Kosovo (as well as Albanians in general) have not gone down and with current world tensions rising, so will the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia. Serbia vows to never stop fighting for Kosovo although the population resent the idea of being part of Serbia.
The people in the Albanian and Albanian Kosovar diaspora also play a big part and carry big opinions on the matter. Some people in the more nationalist Albanian groups want it to be part of Albania again (the majority), but lots of Kosovars living in and outside of Kosovo believe that it should stay its own country because of certain problems with Albania such as the crime rates and economy. Kosovo should be a province of Albania as it used to be because of several reasons like how 54% of the Kosovo population are in favor of unification and would vote for this if they were allowed to. 63% of the population of Albania would also vote for unification. The majority of the 8.5 million Albanians living in the diaspora are only living outside their homelands because of war caused by Serbia. Some might say that crime would seep into Kosovo because of the unification, however, Kosovo has its own police force and if not abolished, it will keep the streets safer in Kosovo during unification. Another reason people might be concerned about merging the two is the Albanian economy effecting Kosovo’s economy or vice versa. In reality, this would make the economy and military strength of both areas much better because if unification occurs, both the Albanian Lek and the Euro will be accepted in the area making both currencies better and stronger. Military power will be better as Albania has much more resources and are able to help the sister country out, Kosovo also has heavy alliance with NATO so the transformation into a country that is already part of NATO will be very easy and will gain lots of resources and support from NATO.
