Have you ever had a live interaction with a real-life celebrity? On Sept. 24 during second period the French students and members of the French club had a great opportunity to attend a live video call with Gims, a French musician. There was over a hundred schools from all over the world watching.
Gims is a very popular artist, and he is known globally. He was born May 6th, 1986, in DR Congo. His real name is Djana Djuna. Gims started out in high school, a part of a Hip-Hop group, but then decided to later start making solo music. He also has made his own record labels, starting in 2013. He has many music videos as well. He had his first solo concert in 2013, in Olympia. He’s grown globally significant and is also very popular in the United States. His albums have made him much bigger over the years. He was on the French Singles Chart for weeks at a time, multiple times. He has 5 kids as well. He also owns a fabulous mansion. Gims is a very successful artist.
As the students were waiting for Gims to join the video call, as more and more schools joined. He ended up being 5 minutes late because of different technical difficulties on his phone. In the meantime, his manager was on the call. The students cheered once he was officially ready to be interviewed. Students got the opportunity to show their fan art and different creative videos. There was hand drawn art as well as digital art. Gims was very pleased with the art his fans have made him over the years and the students were very excited to show off their work. The meeting was in French, so it gave the French students a chance to put their French skills to use with a real-life interaction. Students also got to ask him about his different interests. They learned he like to play video games in his free time, and he enjoys eating Indian food, as its one of his favorite types of cuisine. They also learned he was influenced by many American rap artists.
This was a very exciting time for French students at RMHS. I asked a student how she felt about the meeting, Sophie De Herdt, senior, said, ““I thought it was really cool, I’ve done French since freshman year, so I’ve like listened to Gims’s music since I started high school, so I’ve been following him and I thought it was cool to not actually meet him but like have a life interaction with him, since he’s a person I’ve listened to for several years.” She also claimed she picked up 60-70% of the information during the meeting.
It’s very amazing Rocky Mountain was eligible for a great learning experience with a big artist, and it meant a lot to the French classroom.
