Is skipping out worth it for an extra day of Thanksgiving break? Rocky students thought so. Recently, students are able leave a few days early for Thanksgiving Break if their parents sign a single slip of paper. This piece of paper has made many teachers have to change their lesson plans to count for the mass of missing students leaving for break early. These changes could be a small difference from the original lesson plan, or it could be a big difference. Some teachers planning to take a test on the Friday before thanksgiving break are having to push it past thanksgiving so that all students can take it on the same day. A sophomore named Joseph Williams was interviewed about this situation. He said, “About four people in my first period alone were gone, and I also had about three people gone in my second period class.” While this may not seem like a lot of students gone early, it is enough to make teachers rearrange their lesson plans.
With all these students leaving, the Thanksgiving holiday became stressful and hectic last few days. But these teachers aren’t the only ones struggling; the students who left early are now having to catch up and turn in missing assignments within the late work deadline of Dec. 13. And with Thanksgiving Break ending on Dec. 1. Students only have two weeks to turn in all the missing and late work, which when you think about it is not a lot of time.
A reason for this early absence may be that students only get one week off school for break. Some feel that this break is too short. Cade Nicholason who is a junior at Rocky said this about how he felt the one-week break was. “I think that Thanksgiving break should be longer, it felt way too short to really celebrate.” With only a one-week break, students traveling and seeing family for the holiday don’t get much time to celebrate.
So was it worth it to get an extra day of break and miss a day or two of school. Now with only a few days left to finish their late work, this is the question students are asking themselves. However, now this begs the question, is one week enough time for an adequate break or should it be longer?
