Have you ever seen a group of friends and they share a common way of dressing? This appears not only within clothes but also with music. Many people bond through listening to music together, or they just recommend music to people they know or maybe close with. It is common that people tend to get along with people who express themselves similarly. This can differ between dressing, emotion, music, or just common interest. Music plays a huge part in this because it is a very common way of self-expression, being that lyrics to songs may express emotions or situations that people relate to.
Shayla Mendoza, Senior at Rocky says that her favorite song is “I Don’t Like My Mind” by Mitski because the song has lyrics that she finds comforting and helps her get through rough patches. She also explains that many people she knows also have interest in the same artist. This shows that they have a connection, and it may not be because of their music taste but it is a factor in their relationship because it is a similarity. It is also found that people find the music they listen to by similar sources such as Spotify suggestions, social media, friends, siblings, parents, etc. When children have parents that are interested or passionate about music, they tend to catch on to their parents’ music taste as they grow into teens because they hear it a lot and it’s common. This also applies with siblings because they grow within the same household and are commonly connected with each other. Shayla also says her and her sister share very similar music tastes because they love to listen to music together because it is a source of bonding for them.
Valerie Martinez, Sophomore at Rocky explains her favorite song is “H2O” by Chris Travis. She discovered this artist through a guy she talked to in the past. This shows another example of how people bond through music because she was put on to her favorite artist from someone that was dear to her. Six out eleven interviews show that it is common for people to find music through social media because the songs people say are their favorites are popular songs on TikTok or other apps. Many artists have been recognized and have specific songs that have more listens on Spotify than the rest. The songs that are commonly used on people’s posts grow catchy and get stuck in many people’s heads which makes them fonder of the artist. When people find one song they really like, they may browse through the artist and find more songs they like, making the artist their favorite.

I can relate to this because my friends will send a “song of the day” in a group chat showing us what kind of music they enjoy. They always seem to take time out of their day to show that they’re willing to show what songs they think that we’ll like.

I can relate to this so much. I’ve made so many new friends just by talking about music. And have bonded with lots of different people because of music.

this article talks a lot about how music can bring people together and how many people who are in the same friend group are most likely to have the same music taste. l thought this article was interesting because it also talks about how you grow into your parents and siblings’ music taste because you live with them, and you hear it often.

I like how the author explains her point that people bond through music in the article and then gives examples of students who prove her point.

I see this concept in my own life as well, I once said that I liked AJR and found that, surprisingly, all of my friends do too. I didn’t know this about them, I got to learn something new.
