Oct. 10, at 6pm, the Solid Rock Program at Rocky Mountain High School put on their third night of their play Checking In. The play, preformed originally by students here at Rocky Mountain, followed a variety of families and their troublesome stay at the play’s hotel. Along with the families, we get a glimpse of the chaotic hotel team as they accommodate their guests.
The play began at its scheduled time, opening with its two main characters, the maid and butler. From there we meet the first guests who are an expecting mother with her accompanying husband. This led to a scene of stress where the mother realized who would always be there for her. After that we see a variety of people and their stories, from a stranded group of hikers, a rebellious child, even a lonely widow as she processes her loss.
Throughout the play there were many laughs among the audience. Freshmen Josie Bobodzhanov states, “The plot was amazing and acting, super funny. Overall, super fun and funny to watch”. This was a common opinion among many students in the audience, showing 2/3 thought the same.
When asked by Actor Joie Snelson she begged to differ stating, “Since there was no school that day, there was less people. It’s hard to be comedic with less laughs in return”.
However, comedy wasn’t the only thing that was felt while watching the play. Throughout the story we slowly see a timeline develop.
Explained by Actor Joie Snelson, “the purpose of the story shows a transition of time through someone’s life… By the time we get to the widow scene and her monologue you really see the circle of a woman’s life and how it feels to go through”.
Overall, The Checking In play was not one to miss. It was the perfect mix of comedy all while being touching at times. Whether you went for a laugh, a romance, or a relatable speech about life, you’re sure to have had fun at the Checking In Hotel.
