David Muyolo is a senior here at Rocky Mountain High School. He transferred to Rocky after his sophomore year to achieve his athletic and academic goals. David plays both varsity soccer and football. As David’s senior season comes to an end there is a lot of suspense about where he will be taking his athletic and academic talents. When David was interviewed and asked about where he will be going, he responded saying “I have offers and looks from colleges for soccer.” He then later talked about wanting to focus on this current season.
David talked about how long he has been pursuing football and soccer “I have been playing soccer since I was four and football since 8th grade.” David’s commitment has never been in question. When interviewing one of his current teammates Sawyer Harris commented on how he goes from football to soccer daily saying, “The team is inspired by how he works hard in football but never lets his fatigue show in practice and works hard every day.” This shows a glimpse of daily life by going to an intense football practice followed immediately after by long soccer training every day.
Both the soccer and football program are doing extremely well, and football is currently 4-0 and soccer is 9-0. It’s very clear both teams have one thing on their mind, David said, “my personal goal for football is to honestly be a big help to the team and our goal is to get a state championship.” He followed this by adding “My personal goal for soccer is honestly to win both districts and state.” Both teams’ end goal is winning districts and state. Not only do both the teams have current success but David is contributing to both the football and soccer team. Right now, David has 8 tackles, 1 interception, and 3 pass break ups. He also has 7 goals and 13 assists. This is extremely impressive since it is only 1/3 done with football and just over halfway through with the current soccer season.
One thing that makes David stand out is his hard work and mentality. When interviewing two more of his teammates they commented on this and said, “His work ethic makes the whole team better because everyone wants to match his effort.” They also said, “He has a great attitude, and it seems to lift the team.” If teammates can notice it then it really does become beneficial for the team because then everyone tries to work to the same level which pushes the whole team to work their hardest and be the best they can. David was asked how do you work harder and push to get better every day. He responded on this with, “Honestly it is the people I am around and always preparing mentally, and the physical part is not more important than the mental” It is crazy for such a young and promising athlete’s motivation to be about the team and continual growth.
David prepares for both soccer and football different he said, “For soccer games I try to prepare physically and make sure I have the right food in my system while for football I try to prepare mentally because in football it takes just one play to mess up and it could cost you cause of the tempo but for soccer its always onto the next with how fast it is going.” It makes sense with how different both soccer and football are played that he prepares accordingly for both.
David Muyolo right before their win over Ridgeview, they played on the road and got a commanding 3-1 win.
The last question David was asked during the interview was what his advice for multisport athletes would be especially at a higher level such as varsity and he answered saying, “My advice would be don’t be hard on yourself and always show up cause at times you do not want to, but it is helping the team and yourself grow.” The advice given here is critical because often we are too hard on ourselves and just want to quit, however it is vital to continue and not give up.
