Halloween seems to be one of the main core memories shaping almost everyone’s childhood. It was so exciting as a kid, the idea of dressing up in fun costumes and getting massive amounts of free candy. But is that excitement fading as we get older? Are high school students still dressing up and going trick or treating, or are we too old?
To answer this question, students ranging from freshmen to seniors at Rocky Mountain High School were surveyed about what they did on Halloween night this year, and if they went trick or treating or not.
Suhani Kanda, a freshman, said yes.
“Because I go every year, and I’m trying to go before I’m too old to trick or treat,” Suhani said. “Oh, and to get as much candy as I possibly can for no reason.”
Annabelle Nielsen, a freshman, was also asked the same question, and had about the same response as Suhani.
“Because I wanted candy,” she said.
One of the largest appeals of trick or treating is of course, the free candy. But are upperclassmen as easily tempted by the treats? Or is the idea of dressing up and knocking on strangers’ doors just not as fun anymore?
Fiona Wanless, a junior, replied no to the question.
“Because I stay home and dress up scary and scare kids,” she replied.
So, for some, the fun of Halloween isn’t fading, but has instead just evolved. The interviewer was curious if Fiona believed there was an age limit on trick or treating, and her response was one that many agreed with.
“So, I mean, if you’re like some 20-year-old man knocking on someone’s door, yeah. But if you’re still a kid, it’s fine,” she said.
However, that doesn’t mean that all juniors and seniors are staying home. Faith Coates, a senior at Rocky, said that she did go this Halloween. She also said that no, she doesn’t think seniors are too old to trick or treat. The survey done on sophomore’s was about a mix of the freshman and junior statistics, with a few people going trick or treating, but many just not wanting to.
It seems that as we get older, the excitement Halloween used to bring us as children seems to fade for some, but also evolve for others. It was found that many freshmen still went trick or treating at Rocky, but the number seemed to go down the higher up you went in grade level. Many students just enjoyed passing out candy this year, seeing kid’s happy faces and fun costumes.
