Perfection. Ever-elusive, rarely achieved, hard to define. For Rocky football, however, perfection suddenly seems highly possible.
Call it luck, destiny, or a fluke, but Rocky is on its way to accomplishing something they haven’t since the 2020 season: run the table and have a perfect regular season.
Although Rocky football’s head coach Scott Criner has undoubtedly been preaching a next-game-up mentality, perfection is surely in the back of the minds of Rocky football players now. 5 games into the season and Rocky hasn’t had a contest within 30 points.
The high-powered Grizzly offense is led by quarterback Austin Rovig, who has accounted for 16 total touchdowns on the year. Bruising running back Taeshaun Reese has 7 rushing touchdowns, and speedy Kade Benedick has reeled in 7 scores.
Perhaps even more impressive has been the standout defensive performance. Overall the unit has been lights-out, holding opponents to less than 11 points a game. Individually, safety Trey Jacobsen has been incredible. Jacobsen leads Southern Idaho in interceptions, as he has tallied 3 across the first five games. Jacobsen also disrupts near the line of scrimmage, contributing 3 tackles for loss.
The scary part is Rocky hasn’t yet hit its potential. They’ve thrown picks in 3 of 5 games thus far, along with some untimely penalties and occasional lack of defensive front pressure. If Rocky can put together a complete game and fire on all cylinders, it’s unlikely a team in the state will be able to match pace.
Looking ahead to the remaining 3 regular season games, Rocky has a road date with Meridian (1-4), then two straight home games against Middleton (3-2) and Timberline (4-1). The lone away game Rocky plays will be against a struggling Meridian team whose only win of the year came against an equally underwhelming Mountain View squad. The next two games against Middleton and Timberline present bigger challenges for Criner and Co, but Rocky retains home field advantage.
Rocky is exactly where it wants to be. 3 games remain, and barring any extenuating circumstances or unforeseen injury, the regular season record should read something like this: 8-0 overall, 5-0 conference. Isn’t that just perfect?
